Origins of COPSI
Since the 1960s and 1970s, Canada has opened its doors to immigrants and refugees from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Often, these newcomers do not speak French or English and find themselves in a precarious situation, both materially and psychologically. Faced with this pressing need for support, women from the Latin American community—professionals in the fields of law and education—came together to found an immigrant support organization in 1982. The initial project, called La main dans la main (Hand in Hand), was supported by the federal government's Canada at Work program.
Since then, our organization has built a solid reputation in the community and has never ceased its activities.
COPSI was incorporated and registered as a charitable organization on September 19, 1984.
